The Night I Ditched Steve Perry

I ditched Steve Perry.

It was before he was famous. Way before.

At the time, he was my brother’s friend and hanging around our apartment in L.A.

One night Steve wanted to go to a particular nightclub. No one else in the household wanted to go. Steve didn’t have a car. I did.

I said, “Okay.”

When we got to the club, it was heavy metal rock ‘n roll hell, or heaven, depending on one’s perspective.

Bodies were dancing and undulating everywhere. Lights strobing. The music LOUD!

I turned to look at Steve and was astonished to see him taking a swan dive into the crowd, toward the band.

I’m not kidding when I say it was a “swan dive.” That boy was all in. No fear. It was glorious, if not a little frightening, to behold.

After he disappeared, I hung out and walked around, aimlessly. Tried to listen to the band … but, to me, they were dreadful.

After about an hour I wanted to leave. I looked all over for Steve but couldn’t find him.

I went home.

I don’t recall seeing him after that. Next thing I knew, he was the famous lead singer of Journey.

He had a heck of a voice. Even when he was “just Steve,” we all knew that.

Looking back on that night, I realize that Steve knew where he needed to be to get to the top. He needed to be a part of the rock music scene. He dove in. He was all in. No fear.

Maybe we business types can learn from that. With respect to our Internet marketing efforts, we should try to be a little more swan-divey, all in, with no fear.

P.S. I always wondered how he got home that night.
